Enough talk about students being different. An abundance of research findings, books, blogs, and peer-reviewed articles during the current decade have already defined the concept of the digital native; yet, few examples exist documenting replicable success stories that used the tenets of digital-age literacy as the focal point to improve student achievement. Teach 2.0 refers to a set of instructional methodologies (e.g., collaborative problem-solving, cooperative learning, issues-based instruction) that have demonstrated the greatest success among today’s digital natives. How can classrooms take advantage of today’s Web 2.0 collaborative technologies (e.g., GoogleDocs, Blogger, Webspiration) when they are still encased in Teach 1.0 methodologies (e.g., didactic instruction, sequential and uniform teaching materials, traditional forms of assessment)?
The urgency to turn up the H.E.A.T. (i.e., Higher order thinking, Engaged learning, Authentic connections, Technology use) in student learning using Teach 2.0 methodologies has never been so critical. Given limited budgets and uncertain federal support, school districts nationwide are looking for practical solutions that maximize their available funding to:
- accelerate student academic progress in the core content areas
- promote high-quality and targeted digital-age staff development
- elevate the use of existing digital assets in the classroom
- foster professional learning communities focused on Teach 2.0 methodologies
